Learning objects Arithmetic four

TLF ID M012008

This is an interactive game for two students in which they solve arithmetic problems, similar to 'Connect four'. The players can choose to work with whole number and integer addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The length of time each player will have and the level of difficulty of the problems can also be selected. The players take turns to solve problems. Immediate feedback is provided and if neither player can solve the problem, the worked solution is displayed. Although all features of the game are easy to use, the Help tab, which can easily be accessed from the Activity screen, provides detailed information about how the activity can be varied.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This interactive resource is very useful for the Australian Curriculum content descriptions in years 6 and 8 mathematics about using effective mental strategies and appropriate digital technologies for solving problems involving all four operations.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standards by the end of year 6 about solving problems involving all four operations with whole numbers, and in year 8 about carrying out the four operations with rational numbers and integers. If the game is played without a calculator, the resource would be very useful in supporting the development of mental strategies.
  • The capacity to vary the type and level of difficulty, and the length of time allowed for solving the problems, makes this resource suitable for students at differing levels of readiness. However, both players are required to solve the same types of problems.
